A Midlands mum has revealed her fury at her son's school - after he missed out on a trip to the cinema.

The boy was scheduled to visit his local picturehouse with his peers as part of an end-of-term celebration.

But the teenager was left "crying his eyes out", his mum claims, as he missed the treat.

The St John Fisher Catholic College pupil had been looking forward to seeing a movie and going ice-skating and bowling.

Oliver Elphick only discovered he wasn’t on the list as his classmates at the college, in Newcastle, prepared to board a coach.

Oliver, who has been suffering from mental health issues, had hoped last Friday’s trip to Uttoxeter-based Cinebowl would lift his spirits, reports StokeonTrentLive.

The triple treat was set to include watching the movie Spiderman, getting his first experience of ice-skating and enjoying a bowling session.

Now his mum Lisa Johnson has criticised the school, maintaining she paid the £20 parental contribution on the day of the deadline.

The 42-year-old, from Newcastle, said: “Every child has a ParentPay account, where you scan a barcode to add money to the account. I paid at a local shop and got a receipt.

“I rang the school up straight afterwards and they said it would be absolutely fine and there was no problem.

“Oliver had been so excited about the trip. He went into school on the Friday.

“Then he rang me, crying his eyes out, saying he hadn’t been allowed to go. His friends were laughing at him.”

Lisa says the receipt shows she paid the money at around 3pm on July 1. But the school says the ParentPay window for payments was 'closed on July 1' and, if they missed this, the payment wouldn't have been processed.

“The letter to parents said it just needed to be paid on July 1 at the latest. It didn’t specify a time,” added Lisa.

St John Fisher Catholic College offered Oliver an alternative trip to the Brampton Museum, in Newcastle, free of charge on Friday. He went, but said it wasn’t the same as joining the rest of his year group at Cinebowl.

“I was sad I missed out. I had been looking forward to it for ages,” he said. “I hadn’t been ice-skating before.”

A total of 173 students from Year 8 were included on the list for Cinebowl.

Other year groups also got the chance to enjoy trips to Chester Zoo, Alton Towers and Drayton Manor Park.

Deputy headteacher Garrett Murray said parents were originally given between May 2 and June 1 to pay the contributions.

“This was extended to July 1 to allow for families to arrange payment through ParentPay,” he added. “My understanding is that no payment was received in this case.”

But he stressed any student unable to pay, or who had not paid in time for the deadline, would have been offered the free trip to the Brampton.
