Ghaziabad: Woman calls off wedding over dowry

GHAZIABAD: A 27-year-old woman called off her wedding after the groom’s family allegedly demanded Rs 15 lakh and an SUV as dowry. The woman had got engaged to Peeyush Singh, a private firm employee, three months ago.
Her family said the wedding was supposed to take place on November 22 this year. Peeyush’s father had not demanded any gifts till the engagement ceremony on April 19, but sought an SUV, Rs 15 lakh in cash and gifts for all the relatives after that, the FIR said.“She is strictly against the concept of dowry. She doesn’t want to go to a family that doesn’t respect a woman or honour their word,” the woman’s father said.
The father said that on June 25, Peeyush’s family called them over for lunch at their Indirapuram house and complained about arrangements during the engagement. “They said their relatives should have been given gold rings and demanded an SUV and a wedding in a five-star hotel,” the FIR said. When her parents returned home and told what had happened to the woman, she cancelled the wedding.
