It is hard to take anything too seriously in pre season, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has certainly been given plenty of food for thought at Manchester United.

The Norwegian named a strong side for the victory against Leeds on Wednesday and the match might have already given him a good indication of who should start against Chelsea on the opening day of the new season.

Paul Pogba ran the show in midfield alongside Scott McTominay and Juan Mata, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka put in a much improved performance at right back.

What might impress the United manager the most however was the manner in which his front three linked up throughout the first half and wrecked havoc among the Leeds defence.

Marcus Rashford proved in Wednesday's win he has the ability to lead the line, not only with his sensational solo goal but with his overall hold up play and the manner in which he brought others in to play.

One thing which will delight fans is that Mason Greenwood is rising to the challenge and adapting his playing style to ensure he can work in the right wing role which Solskjaer has perhaps pencilled in for him.

The academy star will not be an out-and-out winger for United, but with Wan-Bissaka supporting him on the overlap he needn't have to be. Greenwood has a work ethic which supporters will love and has an attacking instinct which can greatly help the side whenever they play on the front foot.

United's fluid front three is also aided by the fact it is incredibly quick, helped plenty by the arrival of Daniel James this summer. The Wales international showcased against Leeds the energy and endeavour which he can offer the side, although he is far from the finished article.

Last season United were disadvantaged by the lopsided nature of their attack but the additions of both Greenwood and Wan-Bissaka to the starting line up has greatly helped balance the forward play.

What is abundantly clear is that the formation would not nearly have been as successful without the brilliance of Pogba in the centre of the park, with the French midfielder adopting a quarter-back role which saw him quell attacks before starting them from deep.

Juan Mata aided the way in which United managed to get on the front foot but the Norwegian manager will unlikely be allowed the luxury of using both the Spaniard and Pogba in the same midfield three next season.

It seems like United have finally found a front three which is both balanced and lethal, the biggest concern might be how Solskjaer can select a formation which will see them get the service they thrive off.
