New Newcastle manager Steve Bruce is expected to hold talks with Sean Longstaff in the coming days, in an attempt to convince the midfielder to resist any interest from Manchester United.

Bruce was officially confirmed as the new boss at St James' Park on Monday, and joined up with his new squad for the first time in China ahead of the Magpies' second Premier League Asia Trophy clash. 

Longstaff didn't feature in the heavy 4-0 defeat by Wolves, but according to Sky Sports the 21-year-old is desperate to impress the new man at the helm.

However, the youngster could be tempted by a move to Old Trafford should the two clubs agree on a fee - but it is believed that Longstaff is not actively angling for a move.


Newcastle are holding out for £50 million, a substantial figure which United are not prepared to pay. 

It is thought that boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is attracted to Longstaff's potential, but his club deem the midfielder to only be worth half of the Magpies' valuation.

The young Geordie boasts eleven senior appearances for Newcastle, and netted twice in a spectacular breakout season.

But Solskjaer has warned that United will refuse to pay over the odds for any player.

'We're still in the market looking to do some business but we're patient,' said Solskjaer. 'We don't have to overpay. You have to have the right players at the right price.' 

Newcastle will face West Ham United in their next pre-season friendly on Saturday.
