    National Commission of Women received more than 10,500 complaints of rape and attempt to rape: Smriti Irani

    NEW DELHI: As per data provided by Woman and Child Development (WCD) Minister Smriti Irani in parliament today, more than 10,500 complaints of rape and attempt to rape have been received by the National Commission of Women (NCW) in the last five years.

    Irani added that most complaints mainly came from northern states. The maximum complaints were reported from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Bihar, the minister said while responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

    As per the data given by the minister, out of the 10,531 rape and attempt to rape complaints, 6,987 complaints were received from Uttar Pradesh alone., according to data given by the ministers. Furthermore, 667 complaints were received from Delhi, 659 from Haryana, 573 from Rajasthan and 304 from Bihar.

    Year-wise data provided by the minister showed that the highest number of complaints were received in 2014 at 2,575. While 2.082 complaints were recieved in 2018, the commission has so far received 550 rape and attempt to rape cases this year, she said.

    In the years 2015, 2016 and 2017, 2,328, 1,359 and 1,637 cases respectively were reported.

    Responding to a questions in the Question Hour in the RS, related to the the projects cleared under the Nirbhaya Fund set up by the government in 2013, Irani said that till July 17, 2019, Rs 2,250 crore in funds have been sent to states to implement 29 programmes for ensuring women safety.

    She added that till 2014, only one project towards women safety was approved but that too was not implemented.

    Irani said one-stop centres are being set up in 33 states and a total of 2.20 lakh women have been helped so far in the country through such centres.
