Undertrial kills self in Darbhanga jail

PATNA: An undertrial prisoner, Ashuranjan Kumar Singh alias Bholu Singh (25), allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the rod of a ventilator inside Darbhanga district jail late on Wednesday night.
Deputy superintendent of the jail Nirmal Kumar Prabhat said the deceased had been lodged in jail since January this year in connection with a theft case.
“A stolen bike was recovered from his possession.Singh was lodged in the cell with four more inmates,” he said.
Prabhat said the matter came to light around 1.30am when a warden found the undertrial hanging and alerted the administration. “He used a towel to commit suicide,” Prabhat added.
He said Singh’s body was handed over to his family members after a postmortem at Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
The deputy superintendent said Singh’s two brothers were also lodged in the same jail in connection with different criminal cases. He said no suicide note was recovered from the spot. “An inquiry has been ordered into the incident,” Prabhat added.
