MUMBAI: The state Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the police have destroyed over 500 litres of
adulterated milk after carrying out raids in Ghatkopar and Andheri over four days.
The department has lodged FIRs against six people who were caught tampering and resealing
milk pouches, a modus operandi that has existed since years.
On Thursday, a joint raid was carried out at Guru Nanak Nagar in Ghatkopar, where two people were arrested.
“They were tampering Amul, Gokul and Mahananda milk pouches, diluting it with water and resealing them,” said FDA commissioner Pallavi Darade. While nine litres of milk have been drawn for testing, the department destroyed around 169 litres costing a total Rs 8,293.
Earlier, on Tuesday, a joint raid was carried out by the FDA along with the Sahar police, where four people were arrested. Here, too the miscreants were mixing pouches of branded milk with water. An FDA official said they threw away 348 litres of milk costing around Rs 14,762. “The tampering happens mostly in slums. Adulteration happens more with loose milk than with the packaged ones,” said Shailesh Adhao, joint commissioner, FDA.
