Mumbai: Butter chicken pioneer passes away at 85

Sardar Kulwant Singh Kohli, former sheriff and owner of Dadar's iconic restaurant Pritam Da Dhaba, passed away on Wednesday. He is credited with having introduced authentic Punjabi dhaba style cuisine, specifically butter chicken, in the 1950s-60s.

MUMBAI: Sardar Kulwant Singh Kohli, former sheriff and owner of Dadar's iconic restaurant Pritam Da Dhaba, passed away on Wednesday. He is credited with having introduced authentic Punjabi dhaba style cuisine, specifically butter chicken, in the 1950s-60s.
Given that there were several film studios in Dadar, leading actors like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, and director Yash Chopra were regular patrons.

The 85-year-old native of Rawalpindi died in Hinduja hospital after a brief ailment. Governor C Vidyasagar Rao expressed his condolences. “He was a very cheerful person, a successful business leader, and was witness to the state’s socio-cultural and economic development. He was the pride of the (Sikh) community, his social work was vast and varied. With his demise, Mumbai has lost a popular ‘Samaj Ratna’,” Rao said.
