Watch Tom Cruise Pilot Fighter Jets in Spectacular Top Gun Maverick Trailer

Next year, the movie that decades ago brought fighter jets to the hearts of millions is coming back. At the San Diego Comic-Con this week, the first trailer for the new Top Gun movie was released. And what a sight it is.

The original movie, released in 1986, saw a very young Tom Cruise – he was 24 at the time – take the stick of a fighter jet as a trainee for the United States Navy. Lot of high-octane action scenes that movie had, but Cruise didn't do any of the actual flying himself.

That changes a bit in the sequel, titled Maverick. As the CEO of Paramount Pictures, Jim Gianopulos confirmed last year, the actor does at part of the flying in the film, even though not in the fighter jets themselves.

Cruise is known for his hands-on approach to movies, but despite earlier rumors that surfaced last year, he will not be flying fighter jets himself. That's because he's a civilian, and civilians are not allowed to handle military equipment. Being a licensed pilot tough, he will pilot some other, unspecified aircraft in the movie.

At the time of its release in 1986, Top Gun was a revolution in terms of action scenes, as it showed aerial dogfights in a way never before portrayed. Next year's movie seems to be taking a step further.

The trailer shows a much older Maverick that somehow failed to become admiral and got stuck to the rank of captain. Lucky for us, that means his office is still the cockpit of a fighter jet.

The trailer has a few very exciting scenes showing Cruise at the stick of the jet. The shots of the surroundings taken from the cockpit – showing the takeoff from an aircraft carrier deck, a flyover of a mountain range, and flying in formation – are extremely spectacular.
