Camp No Kids: Head to an overnight camp just for adults

Never had a chance to participate in an overnight summer camp as a kid? It's not too late.

Indy Parks and Recreation will host Camp No Kids, an overnight summer camp designed specifically for adults. Admission is $100 per person or $150 for two people.

Camp will be from 2 p.m. Sept. 14 to 11 a.m. on Sept. 15 at Southeastway Park, about a 30-minute drive from Downtown Indianapolis. All participants must be 21 years and older.

"We've had summer day camps for children over the past 20 years, and we've had so many parents give feedback saying that they would love to be able to do some of the activities that the children do," naturalist at Southeastway Park Caitlin Stahl said. "So we came up with the idea this year to alter that opportunity to adults."

The camp will offer traditional experiences, like like archery, competitive games, craft time and cooking over campfires.

"At any given point there's going to be multiple activities going on throughout the camps that you can participate in," Stahl said. "So while capture the flag is going on, I would be leading, say, a plant tea time where we go harvest plants for tea. So there's usually going to be two activities like that going on at any given time."

Meals and snacks are included in a ticket purchase, but the park welcomes participants to bring their own food. Beer and wine will be served at concessions. All alcohol must be purchased on-site.

For those who decide to camp, Stahl recommends packing basic essentials, like a tent, a mess kit, a sleeping bag, old tennis shoes, a water bottle and bug spray. But leave your recreational vehicles at home: Organizers want an "old-school" camp experience.

The event is limited to 40 people. Stahl said Indy Parks and Rec would like to hold the event annually if it's successful. Register online at apm.activecommunities.com.
