Ashwin, who leads the Dindigul Dragons, walked out to bat at No. 3 after his team lost opener Hari Nishanth as early as the 2nd over of the match. Earlier in the evening, Ashwin had lost the toss and the Dragons were sent in to bat on what was seemingly a difficult pitch for batsmen.

Ashwin though played a few elegant shots during his 19-ball stay at the middle. The India all-rounder smashed 37 runs, including 5 boundaries and a six as he took the Super Gillies bowlers to the cleaners.

Ashwin has been in fine form with both the bat and the ball. The Test speciallist had a dream run in the county season in England as he picked up 23 wickets and hit 167 runs in 3 matches for Nottinghamshire.

Incidentally, R Ashwin was caught and bowled in the 9th over by his Kings XI Punjab teammate M Ashwin, who is the lead leg-spinner for the Super Gillies.

Ashwin's dismissal triggered a collapse as the Dindigul Dragons went from 69 for 3 to 113 for 9. The home team finished with 115 for 9 in 20 overs. M Ashwin picked up 2 wickets in his four-over quota while R Alexander was the pick of the bowlers for the Super Gillies as he finished with figures of 11 for 3 in 4 overs.

R Ashwin is set to play for Dindigul Dragons throughout the 4th season of TNPL. The new season features 8 teams and will be played between July 19 and August 15.

Meanwhile, Chepauk Super Gillies missed captain Vijay Shankar, who is still recovering from the toe injury that cut short his World Cup 2019 campaign in England. Kaushik Gandhi led Super Gillies in the absence of Vijay Shankar on Friday.
