Youngsters can banish boredom and cool off with a free swim in Dudley throughout the summer holidays.

Children aged 16 and under who live in the borough have been urged to take advantage of the sessions at Stourbridge's Crystal Leisure Centre, Dudley Leisure Centre and Halesowen Leisure Centre during the six week break.

The offer starts on Tuesday (July 23) and is valid during public swimming times.

To claim the freebie, parents - or kids aged 13 and over - need to register at  www.freeswimindudley.co.uk to receive a QR code which must be scanned at the centres.

If children have previously registered, they do not need to register again as QR codes will still be active. Lost codes can be re-sent if requested from the website.

Families without access to a computer or internet can sign up at any of the borough’s libraries.

The free swimming initiative follows a successful trial last summer, which saw more than 14,000 take advantage of the free offer. During that time, there were almost 30,000 visits to the borough's leisure centres.

Councillor Ruth Buttery, Dudley's cabinet member for children and young people, said: " As a council we are very keen to promote initiatives that encourage children in our borough to stay fit, active and healthy.

"It is safer to swim at your local leisure centre, supervised by lifeguards, rather than unsupervised in open water such as lakes, canals and reservoirs.

"We hope the free swimming offer will encourage families with younger children to come along to the leisure centres together for a cheap and fun day out.

"For older children boredom can quickly set in during the summer break – now they can go somewhere with their friends without having to spend anything.

"I would urge parents and children to get signed up if they aren’t already – and get swimming."

Children aged eight or over may enter the pools unaccompanied. All children under the age of eight must be accompanied into the water by an adult or responsible person over 16 years of age. One adult must accompany no more than two children under the age of eight.
