Congress' beloved daughter and three-time Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit dies at 81

Former Delhi chief minister and senior Congress leader Sheila Dikshit passed away on Saturday afternoon at 3:55 pm in New Delhi. She was admitted to Fortis hospital at around 10:30 after she suffered a cardiac arrest. Sheila Dikshit's body will remain at her house in Nizamuddin till tomorrow when her last rites will be performed at Nigam Bodh Ghat around 2:30 pm.

Former Delhi chief minister and senior Congress leader Sheila Dikshit passes away at 81

Former chief minister Sheila Dikshit was on Friday admitted to Fortis Escorts heart institute in a critical state where she took her last breath. The 81-year-old former Delhi CM had been ill for a long time and was admitted in the hospital at 10:30 am following a cardiac arrest.

"At 3:15 pm she again suffered a cardiac arrest. She was put on a ventilator and at 3:55 she passed away peacefully," Dr Ashok Seth, director Fortis hospital told news agency ANI. 

Dikshit was a 3 time Chief Minister of Delhi. Her tenure in office lasted 15 years during which time she became the senior-most Congress leader in Delhi and one of the senior-most leaders across the country. Sheila Dikshit might be gone but her contribution towards transforming Delhi into a modern city will never be forgotten. Sheila Dikshit will always be remembered as Delhi's last empress.

05:00 PM: Statement from Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Okhla, New Delhi

"Mrs Sheila Dixit was brought in the morning on July 20, 2019 to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Okhla, New Delhi, in a critical condition with cardiac arrest. A multi-disciplinary team of doctors, led by Dr Ashok Seth, Chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, carried out the advanced resuscitative measures. Her condition stabilised temporarily. However, she had another cardiac arrest and despite all the resuscitative efforts, passed away at 3:55pm on July 20, 2019."

04:55 PM: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee has expressed condolences on the death of Sheila Dikshit. "Deeply saddened at the passing (away) of Sheila Dikshit Ji. When I became MP, she was the Parliamentary Affairs Minister. She always maintained good relations with me. We will all really miss her," Mamata Banerjee said in a tweet.

04:50 PM: Current Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that it is a huge loss for Delhi which expressing his grief at the demise of the lady who was once his most fierce competitor. Kejriwal said, "Just now got to know about the extremely terrible news about the passing away of Mrs Sheila Dikshit ji. It is a huge loss for Delhi and her contribution will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to her family members. May her soul rest in peace."

04:45 PM: The former Congress President Rahul Gandhi referred to Sheila Dikshit as a "beloved daughter of Congress Party". In a tweet Rahul said: I’m devastated to hear about the passing away of Sheila Dikshit Ji, a beloved daughter of the Congress Party, with whom I shared a close personal bond. My condolences to her family & the citizens of Delhi, whom she served selflessly as a 3 term CM, in this time of great grief.

04:30  PM: The Congress party in a tweet after her demise said: We regret to hear of the passing of Smt Sheila Dikshit. Lifelong congresswoman and as three time CM of Delhi she transformed the face of Delhi. Our condolences to her family and friends. Hope they find strength in this time of grief.

04:20 PM: President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his grief at the demise of Sheila Dikshit and referred to her term in office of Delhi CM as one of 'momentous transformation'. In a tweet from the official twitter handle of The President of India, he said: Sad to hear of the passing of Smt Sheila Dikshit, former Chief Minister of Delhi and a senior political figure. Her term in office was a period of momentous transformation for the capital for which she will be remembered. Condolences to her family and associates.

04:10 PM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet said "Deeply saddened by the demise of Sheila Dikshit Ji. Blessed with a warm and affable personality, she made a noteworthy contribution to Delhi’s development. Condolences to her family and supporters. Om Shanti."
