WESTFIELD – A Jamestown man in his early 20s drowned Friday.

The Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team, along with other rescue agencies in the region responded to Barcelona Harbor in Westfield at 4:25 p.m. According to The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department, John R. Penhollow, 24, was swimming with two friends and didn’t come back up to the water surface. They were reportedly swimming in a restricted area between the two breakwalls.

John Griffith, Chautauqua County’s Director of Emergency Services and the county fire coordinator, was on scene. He said there are strong undercurrents in that area, which is why the area is restricted from swimming.

Around 6:30 p.m. rescue workers recovered his body in the water.

Other agencies that responded included fire departments from Westfield, Dewittville, Fredonia, Dunkirk, and Northeast, Pa. The U.S. Coast Guard was contacted as well and was enroute shortly before the body was recovered.

No other information was available.
