McFarlane vows R-rated Spawn movie even if he must fund with Kickstarter

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Back in May, we passed along the weak news that Blumhouse and writer-director Todd McFarlane's upcoming SPAWN flick starring Jeremy Renner and Jamie Foxx might be in a bit of trouble. And today we have further confirmation that this seems to be the case. While at Comic-Con 2019, McFarlane elaborated on the reboot financing hold up saying that he will get the R-rated movie made one way or the other …

Even if he has to finance it through Kickstarter. McFarlane says:

I need $20 million to make this movie, I don't have all of it. I have to ask people for money, and once you ask people for money, they get to have a say in it. Like I said, it's a little bit of an uphill battle, because again, I just want to do this little dark 'R' movie, and they like those PG-13 success movies.

He continues:

Look I am relentless, I'm like a dog with a bone. I will get there, I promise you. I will get there. Because I will beat the system. Here's what I'll do: I'll do it as a Kickstarter… and here's the Kickstarter: I need 20 million people to give me a dollar. And I will make this movie, and when I get the money back I'll return the dollar back to you. And you will be my producers… and all I'll need is the distribution.

And finally he adds:

… there are people on the outside that want to give me money that aren't in the system. But we're going to get it done. I'm just trying to play nice, now, but I'm starting to lose my patience. But we'll try; it's going to get there one way or another, I promise you. I'm not going to let this one go.

Ouch. I don't know about you but I am PRAYING this movie comes together. Fingers crossed! As far as the upcoming movie's plot, recently we got this bit of info, letting us know that Jeremy Renner's Twitch will carry us through the film:

NYPD detective Twitch loses his daughter to gang violence. He then begins his quest for revenge by enlisting the help of his ex-partner Danny to aid in his investigation of the criminal factions in New York. Twitch quickly realizes he’s in over his head as he learns that two of the largest organizations are teaming up to take over the criminal underworld of the city. That’s where Spawn comes in. Twitch is visited by Al, a mysterious man who has knowledge of his daughter’s death. It quickly becomes clear that Al is not who he appears to be as he reveals himself to be Spawn, a messenger from Hell who can aid Twitch in his search for justice.

McFarlane is producing the new SPAWN film alongside Blumhouse Productions. The film is currently still seeking funding and a distributor and doesn't have a production start date yet, but hopefully, we'll hear more regarding all of that soon. Stayed tuned and we'll let you know when we hear more.
