The big screen is in place, the deckchairs are out and the sports schedule has been popular already but now the film programme has been announced.

While sport events have been keeping our interest since the outdoor screen was installed in June in Old Eldon Square   - back in its original position after last year's swap to the opposite end near Wagamama restaurant - we've been eagerly awaiting news of the film screenings to come.

Organiser NE1 Ltd finally revealed its free summer entertainment schedule is to have a longer than normal run this year from July 22 until September 1.

Screen on the Green will coincide with a fairground that is appearing on Blackett Street this summer

And it reveals big hitters with the new Dumbo and Mary Poppins releases and hit musicals Mama Mia, Grease and a join-in The Greatest Showman among the highlights.

The NE1 Screen on the Green has become a familiar part of summer in the city over recent years and this year's longer programme is set to feature a mix of major Hollywood movies, family favourites and children's films during the schools' summer holidays. And live sporting events will feature large too: h ere's the sports programme now running.

NE1’s Screen on the Green movie programme

This year, district improvement company NE1 Ltd has teamed up with intu Eldon Square to deliver a six-week programme of movies - with two free films a day showing during the school summer holidays, from July 22 - plus activities which will include giveaways and events.

Throwback Thursdays

Family favourites and cult classics will be shown each week and the Thursday treats will include A People’s History of the Bigg Market,  a documentary commissioned by NE1 and made with the help of Northern Stars which features people's memories about the famous market.

Fridays

Between 11am and 1pm the intu Eldon Square team will be at Screen on the Green with face-painters and giant games for the public.

While film buffs, who make the most of the opportunity to settle in a deckchair and soak up the entertainment - and hopefully more  sunshine, are being well catered-for, other city visitors will be disappointed to know that another popular summer event will not be taking place in 2019 - while a new one will be making a special one-off  appearance.

They will find that cars are giving way to cycles as Newcastle Motor Show, which last year drew crowds to the Monument area, won't be back this summer but instead the city will be sharing the hosting spotlight for a major sporting event.

Newcastle has been picked as a stage for a National Circuit Series race which will see 80 professional cyclists compete here on Wednesday, July 10 as they ride laps of a 1km route starting at Grey's Monument.

The series is a highlight of British Cycling’s road racing calendar and Newcastle is said to have scored a coup in securing one of its races. Following the recent success of hosting the Heineken Champions Cup , which brought crowds of rugby fans to the city in May, the race is set to earn Newcastle another huge share of national sporting attention.
