Indian Social Club to hold singing competition this weekend

Muscat: The Indian Social Club’s Muscat Singers will be holding a singing competition this weekend to celebrate the arrival of the monsoon season in India.

Called ‘Rhimjim Rhimjim’, which in Hindi refers to the sound made when rain hits the earth, the event will be held on Friday, 26 July, at the ISC headquarters in Darsait, and will feature classic Hindi film songs that relate to the monsoon.

On the occasion of the Sultanate’s 49th Renaissance Day, the organisers also wished His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, saying, “Indian Social Club - Muscat Singers convey sincere greetings and warmest felicitation to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said on the glorious occasion of the Renaissance Day.

“We Pray to God the almighty to protect and support His Majesty, and we take this opportunity to wish Oman and its people continuous prosperity and development under his wise leadership,” they added.

With regards to the competition, a statement from the Indian Social Club said, “What’s a Bollywood movie without rain? Sprinkle a little rain, just a wee spell, and watch plot-lines blossom with the promise of song, love, action, accidents, and the occasional abandoned child. Now, you’ve got yourself a film!

“Rain is regeneration: washing away the old, heralding the new,” added the ISC. “Remember, Ghanan Ghanan in Lagaan? The song sees the anticipating villagers soaked in the monsoon and its joyful, life-giving effects. There are also many romantic rain songs, such as Ab ke Saawan mein jee dare picturised on Reena Roy and Jeetendra in Jaise ko Taisa, and Aaj Rapat Jaayein on Smita Patil and Amitabh Bachchan. The lovers cling to each other & have fun clinging to each other with the sound of thunder!

“Another song from 1942 A Love Story features Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala in a farm house with a tin roof, where falling rain drops are creating music of their own,” said the organisers for the event. “There are the tragic love songs too: the ones that have a silver lining, in Lagi aaj saawan ki phir woh ghadi hai, where Vinod Khanna experiences both sadness and remembrance for a lost love and hope for the future.”

But one of the all-time favourite rain songs is probably the one-take shot featured in Manzil (1979), where Amitabh Bachchan and Moushumi splash through south Mumbai’s monsoon-lashed roads and maidans, while the female version of Rim jhim gire saawan plays as the soundtrack.

“So, let us just walk out into the rain and look up at the sky with emotion,” added the ISC. “To relive this feeling, do join us for a musical feast of rain soaked songs on the evening of 26 July, 7pm onwards. For any further queries, the Indian Social Club can be reached at 24701347.”
