'You should try Titanic, mate': Former snooker world champion Neil Robertson is mercilessly mocked on Twitter after admitting he had no idea hit TV show Chernobyl was based on a real disaster

Former snooker world champion Neil Robertson was left red-faced this week, after his lack of history knowledge left him at the mercy of fans on Twitter.

The 37-year-old took to the social media platform to give his opinion after completing HBO's hit series Chernobyl.

The series covers the horrific events of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the No. 4 nuclear reactor, and has quickly become an international sensation.

Like many others, Robertson admitted he found the series 'fantastic', but it was an admission at the end of the tweet which caused the replies to flood in.

'Had no idea it was actually true until watching the clips at the end.' 

Brought up in Australia and living in the country until the age of 21, Robertson tried to play down his naivety by insisting the subject was neither taught to him at school or spoken about generally.

Some of the responses however ranged from the comical to the flabbergasted.

'You should try Titanic mate. It's a bit far fetched for a film but a great watch,' joked one user. 

'Do you feel the same after Schindler's List or Titanic,' added another, unsure whether Robertson would recognise that these iconic films were also based on true events.

Many others found the funny side, with several respondents asking: 'Where have you been living, on the moon?'

Some were much more ruthless, with one person in the replies commenting: 'One of the best players on the snooker circuit has less brain cells than a goldfish that was actually at Chernobyl.'

In fairness to Robertson, the tweet remained published and the man himself attempted to explain his lack of historic knowledge on the subject.

When told he'd had 'a shocker,' Robertson replied: 'Why’s that? Was never talked about in school in Australia and I’ve certainly never heard anyone talk about it since I’ve been living here.'

The 37-year-old also took the time to reply to another user who asked him if he had been living in a bubble.

In a playful manner, Robertson responded: 'Born and grew up in Australia until I was 21. So I guess you could say I did.'
