HOWRAH: A mentally challenged person, suspected to be from Samastipur in Bihar, bit nearly 22 people, including six cops, on the busy G T Road near Rasbari in the Bally PS area on Saturday. In a bizarre drama that unfolded over 40-odd minutes, vehicular traffic came to a standstill as the police tried to bring the situation under control.
Around noon, the bare-bodied man clad in a pair of trousers, suddenly started pelting stones at bikers and pedestrians.
When locals approached him, the man turned more violent, biting at will. Soon, over 10 people were bleeding from deep gashes on their arms and cheeks.
A skirmish then broke out with locals pelting stones at him. The mob then tied him to a lamppost and landed blows. Later saved him but at a heavy cost. The man bit at least three policemen before they could handcuff him.
“At Howrah District Hospital he attacked more cops and nurses. Finally, he was moved to the Pavlov Institute,” said Pratiksha Jhajaria, ACP (north), Howrah. She said a prescription with a list of neuro drugs and the name Lalit Choudhury was found in his pocket.
