MEERUT: A criminal, who was arrested by the police while trying to break open an ATM machine installed just 100 metres from a police station at posh Defence Colony in Meerut, sustained bullet injuries when he was trying to escape from their custody.
The incident took place on Saturday on the busy Meerut-Mawana road in Ganga Nagar area. Though the incident occurred late in the night, the road was witnessing heavy vehicular traffic due to movement of kanwariyas.
Sources claim that the local police was deployed there right after it was alerted by the bank headquarters in Mumbai of the ATM robbery.

As per the sources, at the time of the robbery there was no security guard manning the ATM machine. The miscreants managed to damage the cash machine, but before they could make away with the money, the robbers’ attempts were promptly foiled by the cops.
“One of the miscreants —Praveen alais Mintoo —was caught while his aide managed to flee. Later, Mintoo also tried to escape from our custody, but he was later held by the police team. During the chase, Praveen also sustained bulet injuries,” Meerut superintendent of police (rural) Avinash Pandey said.
Pandey said a country-made pistol and two gas cutters were recovered from the accused. “We are making efforts to arrest the other accused,” he added.
