Kanwariya's death in Basti spurs protest

FAIZABAD: A kanwariya was run over by a speeding car in Basti late on Sunday evening. Enraged over the incident, fellow kanwariyas attacked a police vehicle that reached the spot.
Ramkesh, 45, a native of Basti, was crushed to death by a speeding car in Harayya police station area of Basti district on Gorakhpur highway. While the errant driver fled in his car, some passersby informed the police.Two police vehicles arrived at the spot but angry kanwariyas damaged one of them. Police pacified the devotees and took Ramkesh to Basti district hospital where he died during treatment.
SHO Harayya Om Prakash Yadav said a group of kanwariyas had damaged the police vehicle but added that the situation was soon brought under control.
In another incident, a kanwariya met with an accident in Chawni police station of Basti on Sunday evening. The deceased was identified as Ram Tahal (38). He was returning from Ayodhya when his bike collided with a cyclist, Rajan (16). Both suffered injuries but Tahal died.
