AURANGABAD: A gambling den being operated from a city-based lodge was busted by crime branch of the city police late on Sunday.
A total of seven people were arrested in the raid while cash and valuables worth over Rs5 lakh was seized from the room. The raid was carried out after reports of some gambling dens being operated from commercial as well as residential spaces came to fore.
After getting a specific tip-off, the crime branch team raided Mrunal Palace Lodge, situated in Khadkeshwar area of the city.

Those arrested have been identified as Praveen Bharat Jaiswal (40), Shahzad Shamsoddin Khan (42), Harsul, Pandit Shyam Kale (57), Nabi Bashir Shaikh (48), Taufik Ibrahim Qureshi (40), Sanjay Rambhau Shinde (42) and Krishna Pandurang Dalvi (40).
Crime branch inspector Madhukar Sawant informed that the suspects were playing cards with Rs1.37 lakh at stake in room number 203 of the lodge situated in the buzzling commercial area of the city.
Following the raid, spot panchanama was carried out and the suspects were handed over to Kranti Chowk police for further action.
Assistant commissioner of police Nagnath Kode said, “With city police cracking the whip on all illegal businesses, some of the suspects are trying to operate by changing their modus operandi and locations. Our latest action is a message to them.”

Aurangabad city police chief, around couple of months ago, issued standing orders to crack down on all illegal businesses including gambling, gutka trade, illegal gas refilling units, illicit liquor and other similar businesses being operated from within the city limits.
“Following series of action, several businesses have shut down while others have moved out of the city limits,” a police officer claimed.
