MYSURU: The University of Mysore (UoM) has made education free for all women students in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This will apply to all colleges, PG centres and government-aided first-grade colleges affiliated to the university in Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Hassan.
UoM registrar Lingaraj Gandhi said a circular has been issued after an academic council meeting held on June 7 decided to implement the government's decision.
The scheme is applicable from the ongoing academic year.
"We are still calculating the number of students who will benefit from this scheme," a source in the university academic section said.
The government will reimburse Rs 5,000 for women students in PG courses and Rs 3,500 for UG courses, which is the fee fixed by the university. The students will pay the fee at the time of admission and it will be reimbursed by the government.
"This will help students from rural areas continue higher education," said Govindaraj, principal of the government first-grade college at Terakanambi in Gundlupet.
