The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday warned of heavy showers and high tide at Navi Mumbai and Raigad.
While the warning for Navi Mumbai of heavy rain and thundershowers holds for 48 hours, Raigad is expected to receive heavy rain and thundershowers till August 4.
If the rainfall stays true to forecast, the Morbe dam, which provides water to areas under the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and under the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), will overflow. The dam has currently reached the 84.78-m mark, about 3 m away from overflowing. “The overflow mark is at 88 m and to have water for the rest of the year, the dam needs to fill to that level,” said Mohan Sonawane, its executive engineer.
Meanwhile, Hetawane dam in Raigad, which also provides water to areas under CIDCO, overflowed on Thursday night. The dam supplies water to Kharghar, Ulwe, Dronagiri, Taloja, Pen-Uran and other villages along with a small part of Nerul in the NMMC area. Its overflow mark stands at 83.1 m at the lower level of the gate and 86.05 m at the upper level. “The storage capacity of Hetawane is 144.98 million cubic metres (mcm) and the water level is currently at 84.35 m, with a storage of 137.208 mcm, filling 92.91%,” said executive engineer Sanjay Jadhav.
While the catchment area of Morbe dam received an average rainfall of 134 mm, Hetawane received 150 mm.
Fishermen across the State have been advised not to venture into the sea till Wednesday. They have been issued an alert for the next five days, with the high tide on the Konkan coast on Wednesday expected to touch 4.21 m at 11.09 a.m. and 3.69 m at 10.47 p.m.
