Ilhan Omar trolls Trump with tweet about Africa visit, weeks after 'send her back' chant

WASHINGTON – Weeks after "send her back" chants erupted at one of President Donald Trump's rallies, Rep. Ilhan Omar fired back by posting a photo of herself and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visiting Africa.

"They said 'send her back' but Speaker @SpeakerPelosi didn’t just make arrangements to send me back, she went back with me," Omar, D-Minn., wrote in a tweet. Omar's post included two photos of her with Pelosi with the two Democrats standing at the Door of No Return, a memorial to the slave trade in Ghana.

Omar was one of four Democratic congresswomen of color that Trump last month said should "go back" to their countries. He was referring to Omar, along with Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan.

All four congresswomen are U.S. citizens and three were born in the U.S. Omar immigrated to the United States as a refugee from Somalia over 20 years ago and is a naturalized citizen.

Pelosi condemned Trump's comments as racist. The House of Representatives also formally rebuked the president's tweets as racist. The president repeated his attacks on Omar and the other three Democrats several times and repeatedly denied that his comments were racist.

Following the tweets, chants of "send her back" broke out during a Trump rally in North Carolina last month when the president mentioned Omar. Trump initially condemned the chant, but later called those who attended that rally "patriots." Several top Democratic lawmakers called for more security for Omar and others after Trump's attacks and the chants.

Ahead of a rally in Cincinnati on Thursday, the first one since his North Carolina rally, Trump said he preferred that the Ohio crowd not say the chant. Trump during his Cincinnati rally did not mention the four congresswomen, colloquially known as the "Squad," by name and no "send her back" chants broke out.

Omar's visit was part of a trip that several members of the Congressional Black Caucus took to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the beginning of the slave trade from Africa to the Americas.

The delegation visited Elmina and Cape Coast Castles.

In remarks to the Ghanaian Parliament, Pelosi said the "delegation has been humbled by" the trip. 

"At Elmina Castle, we saw the dungeons where thousands were grotesquely tortured," she said. "At Cape Coast Castle, we stood before the Door of No Return, where countless millions caught their last glimpse of Africa before they were shipped to a life of enslavement."

“These profound places are a sobering testament to humanity’s capacity for evil — and also a helpful reminder of the capacity for great resilience, renewal, and strength of a people,” Pelosi concluded.
