The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said Konkan, ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra and south Gujarat region recorded extremely heavy rainfall during the past 24 hours till 8.30am of Saturday. It said winds over the Arabian Sea were very strong (45-55kmph) and low-level convergence was taking place along Maharashtra-south Gujarat coasts.
Several places in the state recorded triple-digit rain till Saturday morning. Raigad received 290mm rainfall and Mahabaleshwar 280 mm.
Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather, IMD, Pune, said a trough line from Gujarat to north coastal Odisha via north Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh was present tilting southward. This has increased the rainfall activity in Maharashtra, including all subdivisions - Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Marathwada.

The pressure gradient (difference) over the Arabian Sea, off Maharashtra-Goa coast, and strong westerlies pumping in moisture from the Arabian sea are also causing an intensification in rain in the state. There is a good volume of moisture incursion over the Konkan-Goa region as well as the ghats of Madhya Maharashtra, Kashyapi said.
As per an IMD special report on monsoon, it was active in Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, Vidarbha and vigorous over Marathwada on Saturday.
