What are the benefits of hemp bed linen?

Hemp is naturally antibacterial and anti microbial so it's particularly useful for those suffering allergies or skin conditions.

The most effective time to use these fabrics is of course at rest, to cocoon yourself in healing fabrics when your body is naturally healing and establishing balance.

The medicinal properties in the eco dyes include antioxidant, anti parasitic, anti inflammatory. antiseptic and antiviral benefits and are especially useful in the treatment of eczema, psoriasis, ageing, dermatitis, acne, boils and other skin conditions.

The hemp bed linens are guaranteed to last for a lifetime, with heirloom manchester that will stand the test of time. These sheets will not wear thin or tear as this hemp-cotton blend is up to four times stronger than traditional cotton sheets. The natural hemp fibres stay fresher longer, don't absorb odours, wick away moisture and release stains easily.

'I'd always enjoyed textile art and my mother was a seamstress from the age of 14 so had always had a strong love affair with beautiful fabrics.'

As the textile industry is the second most damaging to the waterways and the planet, the idea of creating linen that was environmentally friendly and healing seemed like the perfect idea.

'Finding the correct fabric blend was the most difficult, and of course the need for very wide fabric suitable for bed sheets but I was fortunate enough to find a beautiful 55 per cent hemp and 45 per cent organic certified cotton blend that is just perfect for bedding,' she said.

'My friend is a master seamstress so together we designed the most beautiful, sustainable, ethical bed linen there is all created by hand right here in our little piece of paradise in south east Queensland.

'The eco dye range is dyed purely with botanicals such as our homegrown indigo ferment, onion skins, berries, turmeric, sunflower seed hulls, bloodwood, lac, logwood, red cabbage, calendula and eucalyptus.'

'We only utilise our collected rainwater in our making and we refuse to make fitted sheets using toxic elastics ' she said
'Hemp bed sheets also do not move about on the bed like traditional sheets,' she added

'Regular or traditional cotton sheets are full of chemicals, toxins and plastics whilst the factories continue to spew pollution into our atmosphere and waterways,' Jul said.

'We only utilise our collected rainwater in our making and we refuse to make fitted sheets using toxic elastics.

'Hemp bed sheets also do not move about on the bed like traditional sheets, they adjust to you and your bed like a glove and using two flat sheets means you don't need to worry about that bottom sheet wearing out quicker than the top.'

What is hemp ?

Hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant species but does not have the psychoactive properties of cannabis.

The protein-rich plant has a distinctly nutty flavour and is now being used in beverages like beer and milk.

The essential fatty acids have anti-inflammatory effects as well as reducing the risk of heart disease and can also be an effective treatment for eczema and acne when applied.

Jul said the body also absorbs the benefits of the hemp during sleep, making for a 'healing' experience.

'In the same way that the skin may absorb environmental toxins and chemicals it also has the ability to absorb the benefits in our natural homegrown dye ferments and leaf infusions and the moringa leaf infusion we utilise,' she said.

She said the moringa leaf also contains large amounts of plant hormones known as cytokinins and an exceptionally high level of zeatin.

'Cytokinins are known to delay the ageing process with its effects on cell division. Along with its strong antioxidant properties it is a perfect plant to detox and heal in whilst sleeping,' she said.

Since launching it, Jul said she's had a huge response from customers who say the linen has transformed how they sleep.

'They felt so incredibly luxurious like sheets that you would only ever find in very exclusive hotels. The first night was unbelievable. I don't think that I have ever slept that well before,' one woman wrote.

'Hemp has suffered with the 'cannabis stigma' for sometime and has only in very recent years been readily available again in the width of fabric needed for bed linen,' Jul said.

'Though the cost is a little more initially, amortised over it's lifetime it's more than affordable, it's necessary. One set of bed linen for life is all you'll ever need.'

Jul said the linen is 'unlike anything you have slept in before' and promises a 'hotel' like experience.

'After a few uses and washes, the linen begins to soften up, losing a microscopic layer of natural wax with each use,' she said.

'This is when these sheets really come into their own, moulding to your body and your bed, much in the way a favourite piece of clothing makes itself yours and never really fits anyone else exactly right.

'With each and every use these sheets become softer and more lustrous.
