MANDYA: Thirteen children were among 18 admitted to hospital after they allegedly ate wild berries from a roadside plant in Mandya district's Srirangapatna taluk on Saturday evening. All of them are out of danger.
Police said Shiva, 36, from Doddegowdana Koppalu in Srirangapatna, consumed alcohol from a vend and demanded s hort eats or crunchies along with his drink. But the shop's staffers allegedly told him to look for roadside berries (Kaachalli fruits).
An inebriated Shiva promptly plucked a few bunches of the berries from a tree. He ate some fruits and handed the rest to children whom he met on the way home.
Within 30 minutes, they experienced stomachache and started vomiting. They were admitted to Mysuru's Cheluvamba Hospital and KR Hospital after treatment at a Srirangapatna health centre at 7pm Saturday.
Chiranth, 14, Diganth, 9, Shreyas, 6, Taruna, 10, Varsham, 11, Ajith, 10, Roja, 11, Sharuna, 5, Janith, 5, Darshan, 16, Chethan, 16, Yashwanth, 12, Sinchana, 16, Maraiah, 70, Venkatesh, 65, Gowramma, 38, and Mariningaiah, 55, are undergoing treatment. Since Shiva had consumed the berries along with liquor, he has been kept in the ICU of a M ysuru hospital.
