PILIBHIT: Police have registered a case against a man and six of his family members for allegedly murdering a woman for dowry on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Saroj, daughter of Ram Chandra of Narayanpur village in Shahjahanpur district.
Based on a complaint lodged by Ram Chandra, police have registered a case against Saroj’s husband Chandrashekhar of Chapraua Kuiyan village, his parents, two brothers and their wives under section 498A (subjecting a woman to cruelty by husband or his relatives) and 304B (death of a woman caused by burns or bodily injury or otherwise than under normal circumstances) of IPC and section 3/4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

The father of the victim claimed that he had married his daughter off to Chandrashekhar on April 22, 2016 after giving enough dowry. He said that the family of the accused was not satisfied with it and started torturing his daughter demanding a refrigerator, washing machine and Rs 2 lakh in cash. “Several attempts were made on her life. Finally on Monday morning, Chandrashekhar informed me over phone that she had hanged herself. On reaching his house, I found that her body was lying on the cot and there were prominent noose marks on it. I am sure that her husband and family members are behind the death,” he added.
Bilsanda station house officer Atar Singh said that a case has been registered against seven persons and police are on the lookout for the accused.
