KOLKATA: A complaint was filed against a gang of four as cops believe they are duping medical aspirants in the name of providing them management quota seats. The Jadavpur police have registered a case after a businessman Shankar Goswami, a resident of Deshbandhu Sarani in Howrah's Bally alleged he was duped of Rs 17.5 lakh. The frauds had promised him a seat at a private medical college in Kolkata for his eldest daughter.

Cops said that they have received three other complaints of similar nature from the city and suburbs and it is likely that the same gang is involved. Police sources said that the complainant and his wife Sudeshna Goswami met the four accused in the month of May. The four had then promised to get their elder daughter admitted "in a prestigious MBBS course in Kolkata."
"Accordingly, they demanded a sum of Rs. 17.5 lakh from the complainant in various instalments. Worse, the accused kept demanding for more. However, even as classes started in the college where she was to be admitted, neither the girl got admission nor was the money refunded," the FIR stated. When contacted over phone, Shankar said that it was not a case he would like to discuss. "I am presently busy, you can contact me later," he said.
The cops said that the investigations have just begun. "We have to look in to the various links of this gang. As of now, they do not look like a well-organized one," said an investigating officer.
Earlier, a similar gang was busted by the Jadavpur police in November 2017 after a three-month long investigation. The case has been registered under IPC sections pertaining to criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The Jadavpur police said they will be checking the CCTV footages for leads on the accused as they had collected the money from in front of a reputed hospital.
