NEW DELHI: In June, Delhi government had announced that it would pay Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) the board exam registration fee of students studying in classes X and XII in government and aided schools. The registration has now started and the students have been asked to pay the fees, which have increased by over 40% for Class XII and over 300% for Class X.
The government is now working out the funding process. Students who have already paid the fees would be reimbursed the amount.
Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio, had announced that the government would pay the fees when a student raised the question at an event.

Till last year, the registration fee for Class XII was Rs 1,050 for five subjects, which has now been increased to Rs 1,500. The fees for additional subjects has been increased to Rs 300 from Rs 75 earlier. The registration fee for Class X has also been increased to Rs 1,500 from Rs 450 last year. For SC/ST candidates, it has been hiked to Rs 1,200 for both classes X and XII from Rs 50 last year.
Students have to pay the registration fee by October 15 after which a late fee of Rs 2,000 would be charged.
Principals and schoolchildren have complained about the sudden increase in the fees. “We don’t know why CBSE has increased the fees. For SC/ST students the increase is huge,” said the principal of a Delhi government school.
CBSE, however, said the fees have been increased after a gap of five years. “Our registration fees are much lesser than what is charged by CISCE or NIOS,” said a CBSE official.
The schools will be asking students to pay the fees as they haven’t heard from the government. “We will soon announce that the government is going to fund the registration fees. We are trying to figure out if we can speak directly with CBSE to reduce the fees for Delhi government schoolchildren. If any student has already paid the fees, the government will reimburse it,” said a government official.
