PATNA: Excise department sleuths on Thursday seized India-made foreign liquor (IMFL) worth Rs 30 lakh in Gopalganj, a day after an SHO was suspended and four others, including two sub-inspectors, were detained at Kuchaykot police station of the district.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of excise department officials intercepted a truck bearing registration number of Haryana near Balthari checkpost and searched the vehicle.
The officials were shocked to find 300 cartons of Haryana- made liquor being smuggled to Bihar. Three persons were also detained for interrogation.
Gopalganj excise superintendent Rakesh Kumar said the seized consignment was to be delivered to a liquor supplier of Hajipur in Vaishali district. The consignment was booked allegedly by one Manish Kumar of Vaishali from Sonipat in Haryana, he added.
The cartons were concealed in the truck carrying eggs to mislead the investigating agency. “We are trying to collect more information about the traders involved in the smuggling of liquor from outside the state in violation of the new prohibition law,” the excise superintendent said.
On Wednesday, a team of the prohibition cell of the state police headquarters conducted a search of the ‘malkhana’ of Kuchaykot police station of the district after a video showing liquor bottles being transported from the police station went viral on social media.
While the SHO was put under suspension, four cops, including two SIs were detained at the police station. “The stock of the seized liquor in the ‘malkhana’ is being matched with the records of the police station,” a DSP-rank officer said.
