Thanjavur: Youth sentenced to 10 years in sexual assault case

The girl said that Manimaran, assuring to marry her, sexually assaulted her.

Thanjavur: The Mahila fast track court here has sentenced one Manimaran (24), son of Sababathi of Kattathi village in Pudukottai district, to undergo ten years imprisonment and pay Rs 20,000 fine in a case of sexual abuse involving a 17-year-old girl of Unchiyaviduthi village near Pattukottai in Thanjavur district on Thursday.

According to the police, Manimaran and the girl loved each other few years back, but parents of the girl objected to this.

On May 26, 2016, Manimaran took the girl to Kumuli near Theni and stayed in a hotel room. Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s father, Thiruvonam police brought them back.

The girl said that Manimaran, assuring to marry her, sexually assaulted her.

The police later arrested Manimaran under Protection of Children under Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) 2012. The case was heard by Mahila court here.

Ms. M. Ezhilarasi, Judge, passed the order on Thursday.
