Rishi Kapoor remembers uncle Shammi Kapoor on death anniversary: Never a star like him

On Shammi Kapoor's eighth death anniversary, Rishi Kapoor took to Twitter to share a throwback picture of the actor.

It's been eight years since Shammi Kapoor, our home-grown Elvis Presley, left for his heavenly abode. The actor, who changed the depiction of the lead hero in Indian cinema through his dance moves, passed away in 2011 due to chronic renal failure in Mumbai. On his eight death anniversary, Shammi's nephew and actor Rishi Kapoor took to Twitter to remember the star.

Rishi Kapoor, who is currently recuperating from cancer in New York, went down memory lane and posted an old picture of the actor. Along with the actor, he wrote, "Remembering Shammi Kapoor. Left us 14th August 2011. Never a star like him!"

Born to theatre actor Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsharni Kapoor, Shammi was given te name of Shamsher Raj Kapoor at the time of his birth. He is the second child of his parents, born before Shashi Kapoor and younger to Raj Kapoor. The actor married actress Geeta Bali in 1955 after four months of the day they first met. Bali did a cameo in his film Rangeen Raaten. They had two children, son Aditya Raj Kapoor and daughter Kanchan. After the demise of Geeta Bali in 1965 due to smallpox, the actor married Neila Devi in 1969. His new wife belonged to the former royal family of Bhavnagar in Gujarat.

Shammi Kapoor is known for films like An Evening in Paris, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Dil Deke Dekho and Junglee, among others. He made his debut with the 1953 film Jeewan Jyoti. From acting as the lead hero to playing a grandparent or a godman, Shammi Kapoor performed various roles in his career-span of around six decades. Shammi Kapoor was last seen in Ranbir Kapoor's Rockstar (2011).

Rishi Kapoor is in New York since September last year. The actor went to the Big Apple after being diagnosed with cancer and is now undergoing remission there. His last film, Jhootha Kahin Ka, was released on July 19 and bombed at the box office. The actor shot for the film before leaving for New York.

Recently, in an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Rishi Kapoor said that rumours about his ill-health spread like wildfire when people saw him with white hair. However, he clarified that the look was for a film, and that his hair hadn't turned white because of his illness.

He said, "When I first came here, everyone was worried for me. The problem was detected when I was shooting in Delhi and was required to dye my hair white. I was told to immediately rush to the Sloan Kettering Hospital. I came here with my hair still dyed white. When word got around that Rishi Kapoor had gone to New York for some kind of medical examination, rumour spread that I was so unwell that my hair turned white overnight."
