BENGALURU: The newly-formed government in Karnataka is likely to constitute a task force to advise the government to make plans for the overall development of Bengaluru. This was revealed by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa during his Independence Day speech in the City on Thursday.

“Bengaluru Development Task Force will be formed for the overall development of Bengaluru,” Chief Minister said. “The aim of my government is to make Bengaluru the real Silicon Valley of India. Bengaluru should be developed just like California and San Francisco,” he said during his address.

The new body is expected to comprise of elected representatives, urban planners and eminent entrepreneurs. Yediyurappa had constituted Agenda for Bengaluru Infrastructure and Development Task Force (ABIDE) when he was the Chief Minister in 2008. The task force ceased to exist after Yediyurappa lost power.

Karnataka, he said, has gained a prominent place in the global technology map. “Our state contributes more than 30% to India’s IT exports. Bengaluru, home to more than 7,000 start-ups, has earned itself the pride of being the startup capital of India. Information technology and biotechnology sectors have significantly contributed to the state’s economy. The Government is keen to offer much more encouragement to these sectors. The State Government is all set to take IT and BT beyond the boundaries of tech capital Bengaluru,” the Chief Minister said.

The formation of the task force is, however, not new to Bengaluru. Successive governments in the past too had constituted committees promising to fast track Bengaluru’s development. That included Bangalore Agenda Task Force (BATF), which was set up by the then Chief Minister S M Krishna in 1999 Bangalore Vision Group (BVG) by Siddaramaiah.
