Mob damages government property in Krishnagiri

A wild elephant had attacked them when the duo was on way to their farm around 6 pm on Friday.

KRISHNAGIRI: Angry mob damaged government property following the death of a farmer at Ayyur in Denkannikottai taluk in Krishnagiri district on Saturday.

However, the relatives of the deceased victim have said that the violence was triggered by outsiders and they were not involved in it as alleged.

On Friday night, P. Abbayaa (65) of Ayyur village was trampled to death by a wild elephant and his cousin N. Nagaraj (50) was hurt as he ran for safety. The injured Nagaraj was admitted to the Krishnagiri government hospital.

A wild elephant had attacked them when the duo was on way to their farm around 6 pm on Friday. This incident came to light after Nagaraj, survivor of the wild elephant attack, returned home and told the story to his relatives. "My father and his cousin were attacked by the wild elephant when they went to the farm to guard the tomato crop from being raided by the wild animals," recalls A. Thanganapalli of Ayyur.

Thanganapalli, son of the elephant attack victim Abbayaa, added, "a mob created trouble when the forest staffs made preparations to transport my father's body to the Denkannikottai hospital."

They were stopped from transporting the body recovered by them. Later, the violent mob went to the department's eco-tourism center run by the NGO and damaged government property worth `4 lakh. The picnickers staying in the center were also targeted by the mob.

The Denkannikottai police DSP D. Sangeetha, inspector R. Saravanan, thashildar A. Balasundaram, and others went to the spot and had talks with the mob, which continued till the early hours of Saturday.

"A case has been registered against 20 personsfor triggering violence, damaging government property and not allowing the government staff to perform their duties," Denkannikottai DSP Ms. Sangeetha said.
