NEW DELHI: On the lines of the Deepotsav in Ayodhya during Diwali, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh will organise a grand Krishnaotsav in Mathura next week, on the occasion of Janmashtami.

Around 100 VIPs, including the chief minister, are expected to be in attendance at the three-day event in the city revered as Lord Krishna’s birthplace.

The state government has sought the help of an event management company to organise the first edition of Krishnaotsav during August 23-25, on a 4.3-acre Ramlila ground near the Krishna Janambhoomi temple.

“The event will be attended by a large gathering which will include senior officials, tourists, celebrities and the local public,” the UP government said in a note on the plans, which ET has seen.

The streets and temples of the city would be decked up with lights. All major intersections in Mathura and Vrindavan, roads and ghats would be decorated too. Local MP Hema Malini is expected to make a classical-dance performance on the life of Radha-Krishna. Indian and foreign artists will also be giving performances.

The culture and tourism departments of UP, along with the local administration, will handle the event.

The Adityanath government had organised Deepotsav in Ayodhya during Diwali in the past three years. As part of the celebrations there, the Saryu River bank was lit up with lamps and the entire town was decorated with special gates.

The BJP government since last year has also started organising a two-day-long Rangotsav during the Holi festival in Mathura and Barsana — the latter is considered as the birthplaces of Radha — to commemorate the famous Lathmaar Holi. The CM had attended the programmes. The UP government has also made elaborate arrangements since last year for the annual Kavad Yatra, including showering of rose petals on the pilgrims by senior police officials from privately hired choppers.
