PATNA: A group of heavily armed Maoists killed two persons, including a former Maoist leader, in Lakhisarai on Monday for being “police informers”. The police, however, blamed the daylight murders on their refusal to pay “extortion money” to the banned outfit.
Police said the bike-borne attackers used an AK-47 assault rifle to spray bullets on 45-year-old Madan Yadav, who had quit the banned group a few years ago, at a highway dhaba near Mananpur Mahadalit Tola under Chanan police station around 9.30 am.
The driver of an SUV in which he was travelling was also killed. He has been identified as Chhotu Kumar (35) of Bhalui village in Lakhisarai district.
Eyewitnesses told the police that Madan tried to escape when he saw a group of around 15 Maoists descend at the dhaba, but he was caught and pumped with four bullets into his head and stomach leading to his instant death. Madan, who had deserted the banned outfit a few years ago over internal differences, was a native of Mananpur Basti Nimiyatand village in the same district.
The daylight killing has sent shock waves among local residents.
Lakhisarai additional SP (operation) Pawan Kumar Upadhyay said the Maoists used AK-47 assault rifles in the incident. Five empty cartridges of 7.62 bore, which are used in the sophisticated weapon, were recovered from the site. An extensive manhunt has been launched to nab the culprits, he added.
The two bodies have been sent to the Lakhisarai sadar hospital for autopsy. The SUV, which was seized by the police, belonged to Ganesh Rajak, the mukhiya of Bhalui panchayat, the SUV driver’s village.

The deceased’s relatives said the Maoists killed the two on suspicion of being police informers. But additional SP Upadhyay said, “Personal enmity appeared to be the reason behind the murder of the two persons. They raised slogans in favour of the CPI (Maoist) before leaving the spot.”
Lakhisarai SP Sushil Kumar reached the spot after the incident and said, “Those involved in the crime will be arrested at the earliest.”
