SC grants CBI 2 more weeks to probe Unnao rape survivor's accident

A bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose granted two weeks' more time to CBI to complete the probe and also asked the rape survivor and her family members to desist from making public statements.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday directed CBI to complete investigation into the alleged attack on Unnao rape survivor in a road accident in which she and her lawyer were seriously injured and two of her aunts, who were key witnesses in the rape case, killed.
A bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose granted two weeks' more time to CBI to complete the probe and also asked the rape survivor and her family members to desist from making public statements.
The bench said such statements may help the accused in the case and requested their lawyer to convey the message to them. It said that that family can approach the court if it has any grievances relating to the case.
"If you have any grievances, feel free to tell us. We are here to help you. Some members of her family are going to the media. It may rather help the accused," the SC bench observed.
The bench also directed the Uttar Pradesh government to pay Rs five lakh to the the Unnao rape survivor's lawyer who was seriously injured in the road accident. The court had on August 1 directed the state government to pay compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the survivor's family.
The top court had earlier directed CBI to complete the investigation in the case within seven days, adding that the agency could avail additional seven days in exceptional circumstances. It had ordered transfer of all the five related cases to Delhi.
