NEW DELHI: A three-year-old girl died while seven others were injured in two separate incidents of building collapse in the capital on Monday.
A portion of an old structure collapsed in northeast Delhi’s Karawal Nagar area at 5:30pm on Monday evening. Locals informed the police and a rescue operation was launched. Members of the family were pulled out of debris. They were identified as Sheela (30), Neha (12), Monu (8) and Nancy (3).
All four were taken to a nearby hospital where Nancy was declared brought dead. Nancy’s father Vijay Kumar is a taxi driver and was out for work when the accident happened. His wife and two kids have been hospitalized, and are said to be in a stable condition. DCP (northeast) Atul Kumar Thakur said that a section of the roof collapsed on the victims, and a case under sections of causing death due to negligence had been registered for further investigation. Probe revealed that the building was in bad condition. The body of the child has been shifted to a mortuary and will be handed over to the family after an autopsy.
In another incident, four people got injured when a building collapsed in north Delhi’s Jharoda village on Monday morning. Fire department officials said that the incident was reported to them at 6:45am and four fire tenders were pressed into service to help the rescue teams. Rajan Kumar (20), Vikas (18), Vipin (25) and Kundan (18) were sleeping when the structure came crashing on them. One of them suffered a fracture in his leg, while others suffered minor injuries. Investigating officers said that the building was very old.
