Traffic police have taken a tough stand action against those using noisy silencers on their two-wheelers. They seized as many as 110 modified silences in a month-long drive and destroyed them using a road roller on the traffic police station premises here on Monday.

DHARWAD: Traffic police have taken a tough stand action against those using noisy silencers on their two-wheelers. They seized as many as 110 modified silences in a month-long drive and destroyed them using a road roller on the traffic police station premises here on Monday.
Police commissioner M N Nagaraj said police would continue the drive for a few more days. “It is a warning to those who think they can roam on bikes with altered silencers.
We will remove modified silencers mercilessly and impose fines under the MV Act,” he said.
“Today we have destroyed silencers worth more than Rs 6 lakh,” he added.
Dharwad traffic inspector Murugesh Channannavar told TOI that they seized vehicles with modified silencers during the drive and asked bike riders to come with the original silencer along with their parents to the station. “The modified silencers used to be removed at the station itself and we used to impose fines on the offenders. Our effort was hailed by parents and citizens alike,” he said.
Deputy commissioners of Police Nagesh D L and Shivakumar Gunare, ACP S M Sandigwad and others were present on the occassion.
Fine collected
Traffic police booked as many as 1,289 cases in HUbballi Dharwad on Sunday and collected Rs 1.62 lakh as fine from traffic rule violators. Cases were booked for driving without driving licence, helmetless riding, signal jumping and other offences.
