PATNA: Two police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were killed and another was injured in an exchange of fire with
criminals in
Saran district on Tuesday.
The incident took place around 7pm when a police team led by sub-inspector Mithilesh Sah raided the locality near Marhaura bus stand to arrest some notorious criminals. Mithilesh and a constable, Farooq, were killed in the encounter.
Another cop, Rajnish Kumar, suffered bullet injuries.
Saran range DIG Vijay Kumar Verma said police had gone to the bus stand on specific information about the congregation of some notorious criminals. "On seeing the police, the criminals opened fire. Mithilesh and Farooq died on the spot," the DIG added.
The criminals, however, managed to escape under the cover of darkness. While Mithilesh was a native of Bhojpur district, Farooq hailed from
Saharsa district. The injured policeman was rushed to Chhapra sadar hospital for treatment. His condition is stated to be serious.
The DIG and Saran SP Har Kishore Rai rushed to the encounter site after the incident. "The area has been cordoned off and raids are on to arrest the assailants. We have taken the incident as a challenge and those involved in it will not be spared," the DIG said.
