Man, 23, charged with second-degree murder in Canada Day shooting

Ottawa police say a man has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to a shooting in the city’s ByWard Market on Canada Day.

An arrest warrant for the 23-year-old accused had been in place since July 5.

Police have said Ryan Kabuya-Ntumba was shot shortly before 3 a.m. on July 1.

They say nearby officers heard the gunshots and began providing first aid at the scene but 21-year-old Kabuya-Ntumba died in hospital.

Police later charged another man with accessory after the fact to murder.

Officers say Moadd Maadani turned himself in to police on Wednesday morning. He’s scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
