PATNA: Police on Wednesday registered an FIR against seven people, including district board chairperson Meena Arun, for their alleged involvement in the attack on a police team at Marhaura market in the district on Tuesday.
Two policemen – sub-inspector Mithilesh Sah and constable Mohammad Farooq – were killed in the attack. The condition of another constable, Rajnish Kumar, who had sustained bullet injuries, is stated to be critical.
The police team was travelling in an SUV when the criminals opened fire.
The FIR was registered at Marhaura police station on the basis of the statement given by a sub-inspector, Vikash Kumar, who was also inside the police SUV which had come under attack of the criminals. Kumar, however, had escaped unhurt.
Two SIs and four constables were travelling in the SUV when they were intercepted by criminals travelling in another SUV. The criminals had opened fire on the police vehicle after overtaking it.
The criminals had also looted an AK-47 rifle and two 9mm pistols from the police team after killing SI Sah and constable Farooq. It was Farooq who was carrying the assault rifle.
DGP Gupteshwar Pandey told TOI over the phone that Arun was booked as a regular revolver issued in her name was recovered from the crime spot.
“Six empty cartridges fired by criminals were recovered from the spot. More cartridges would be found after the road becomes clear of waterlogging. The recovered cartridges are generally used in regular weapons,” a senior police officer said.
“While at least 10 criminals had reached the spot in an SUV, 10 others reached there in six bikes. The criminals attacked the policemen with butt of firearms before opening fire,” he added.
The officer said the police personnel didn’t get time to retaliate. The officer said Sah had received two bullet injuries and Farooq one. Both of them had died on the spot.
