UP: Flood alert in Mathura as Yamuna hovers near danger mark

AGRA: A flood alert was issued in Mathura district on Thursday as water levels in Yamuna hovered close to the danger mark, with authorities setting up flood outposts and putting boats on standby to deal with any eventuality.
According to officials, the situation is being continuously monitored and people staying in low lying areas have been alerted. While 31 flood outposts have been set up with 150 private boats being placed on standby, two PAC flood companies have also been called, said district magistrate Sarvagya Ram Misra.
He said, at present the river is flowing about 70 cm below the danger mark of 166 meters.
He added that the administration has started “munadi” in low lying areas to alert the people. He claimed that all arrangements have been made to tackle the situation. He further said that Yamuna could possibly touch the danger mark by Friday morning.
Talking to TOI, additional district magistrate (Finance) Brijesh Kumar, said that there are few villages in Maant, Chhatta, Sadar and Mahavan where water could enter once the river crosses the danger mark but the administration is fully prepared for it. He added that so far only some fields are submerged in water.
He said 24 personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been stationed in Maant area where the chances of water entering inhabited areas is high.
