Manitoba is nearly halfway to its goal of advancing to the playoffs after the opening day of Baseball Canada’s 15-and-under national championship on Thursday in Oshawa, Ont.

The squad, which includes Conor Geekie of Strathclair, Nolan Chastko of Brandon, Riley McBride of Gladstone and Alexander Klassen of Austin, won twice as it seeks to earn one of two spots in Pool B to advance to the playoffs against the power pool teams.

Geekie and McBride each had a hit and scored a run in the tournament-opening 3-0 victory over New Brunswick. Chastko didn’t allow a hit in two innings on the mound, and struck out two.

In the evening game, Manitoba topped P.E.I. 6-5 in a wild one. Manitoba scored once in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 1-1 and send it to extra innings.

Both teams scored twice in the eighth inning, and Manitoba put across three runs in the ninth inning and held P.E.I. (1-1) to two for the victory. Teams start the extra innings with runners on first and second base.

Chastko had two hits, McBride had a hit and an RBI and Geekie drove in a run for Manitoba, which faces Newfoundland and Labrador (0-2) and Alberta (1-1) in games today. They close out the round-robin on Saturday against Nova Scotia.
