There have been a number of rapes on minors in the state of Uttar Pradesh, including a 12-year-old girl who was attacked by six men over a family dispute about the construction of a drainage channel.

The girl was raped in front of her family and her relatives were beaten when they tried to intervene.

A report has named India as one of the worst places to be a woman, partly because of its high rates of sexual violence.

The government has tried to tighten its laws and recently put in place the death penalty for the rape of girls under the age of 12.

Out of 30,000 rape cases in 2016 – the most recent statistic – just a quarter resulted in any conviction, according to the Times of India.
