Pak firing kills soldier from Alipurduar
Jalpaiguri: A Gorkha Rifles soldier from Alipurduar district was killed in a ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the LoC in Nowshera sector of Rajouri on Friday. Naik Rajib Thapa (34) is survived by wife Khushboo and a seven-month-old daughter.
According to the Army, Thapa was manning a forward post in Kalsia village when it came under unprovoked firing from across the border in the early hours of Friday.
He was taken to a military hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Thapa’s death in Sunderbani sector is the third in less than a week.
According to locals, Thapa had last visited his Mechpara tea estate home in Alipurduar’s Kalchini block six months ago, after his daughter was born. His father Kumar Thapa is a retired worker of the garden and the family lives at Labour Line.
As news of his death sp-read, work at the tea estate came to a halt. Hundreds gathered around his house and stopped the media from speaking to the family. Alipurduar zilla parishad mentor Mohan Sharma rushed to meet the family and assured support.
Some, however, claimed Thapa’s wife and parents ha-dn’t been informed of his death. “From what we have been told by the administration, Thapa’s remains are likely to reach his house on Saturday afternoon. Till then, we don’t want his wife or parents to know of his demise. He was the only son in the family and has three sisters,” Thapa’s maternal uncle Ajoy Kumar Array said.

“During the exchange of fire, naik Rajib Thapa attained martyrdom. He was a brave, highly motivated, and sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” Lt Col Anand said.
The Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire on Thursday night, too, by unprovoked firing along the LoC in Sunderbani area of Rajouri district.
Mohammad Addul Karim, 22, who was critically injured when a mortar shell from Pakistan hit his house at Dabraj village in Mendhar sector late on Tuesday, also succumbed to his injuries. Nearly half-a-dozen houses were damaged in the firing, as per reports
