KHAGARIA: Health services, including emergency and outpatient department (OPD) services remained paralysed at Khagaria sadar hospital as doctors and paramedical staff went on a strike in protest against the alleged assault and manhandling of doctors and paramedical staff by some miscreants on Thursday.
The trouble started after the death of one Ajit Kumar Singh of Bakhtiyapur village under Mansi police station area in Khagaria district, who was hospitalised after snake bite on Thursday.
Agitated family members and villagers went on a rampage and damaged furniture and glasses of the OPD. They alleged that the victim died due to negligence of doctors on duty at the sadar hospital.
“A person with snake bite was brought to Khagaria sadar hospital at around 11am on Thursday. His condition was critical when he was admitted and he died during treatment. Soon after the death of the patient, his relatives along with a mob attacked the medical officer incharge Ashok Prasad and started thrashing him. They even dragged him out of the hospital but was rescued by the home guards deputed at the hospital,” civil surgeon Dinesh Kumar told this newspaper.
Sources said the situation was brought under control only after the arrival of police forces led by sub- divisional magistrate Dharmendra Kumar and ASP (operation) Raj Kumar Raj. A named FIR has been lodged against five and 100 unidentified persons with Chitraguptanagar police station in this connection, hospital sources said.
Meanwhile, members of the district unit of Indian Medical Association(IMA) have threatened to intensify the agitation if the district as well as police administration fail to provide security to doctors and paramedical staff on duty. “Such incidents of attacks on doctors are now frequent and there is an immediate need for security,” said secretary, district unit of IMA, Prem Kumar.
