National Hurricane Center Tracking Depression Forecast to Become Hurricane Near Puerto Rico By Thursday

If depression strengthens into a storm it would be named either Dorian or Erin

SPACE COAST DAILY TV WEATHER UPDATE: Space Coast Daily’s Chris Bonanno discusses newly-formed NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center Tropical Depression 5 in the Atlantic and Brevard’s rain chances on Saturday. 

NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER – A new tropical depression, christened “TD Five,” has formed in the Atlantic southeast of the Lesser Antilles and the National Hurricane Center forecast currently call for it to become a tropical storm by Sunday morning and possibly a hurricane by early next week.

According to the National Hurricane Center, locally heavy rainfall is possible over southern and central Florida associated with this disturbance.

“Further east, another tropical disturbance well east of the Windward Islands also has a high chance of formation by early next week,” said the most recent NHC update.

If the depression strengthens into a storm it would be named either Dorian or Erin as there’s another system to the east of Florida that might develop into a tropical storm before this depression.

That system off the coast of Florida is forecast to stay over open water as if it moves parallel to the East Coast to the northeast.

BREVARD COUNTY WEATHER FORECAST

The National Weather Service in Melbourne forecast for Saturday has a 20 percent chance of showers, mostly sunny skies, with a high near 90 and northeast winds 10 to 15 mph.

On Saturday night, there’s a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 75. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Sunday: A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 am. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. Heat index values as high as 101. Light and variable wind becoming northeast 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11 pm, then a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 76. East northeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Monday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 11 am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 92. West wind around 5 mph becoming south southeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Monday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11 pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 76. West southwest wind around 5 mph.

Tuesday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 11 am. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. West wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
